Indianapolis Colts Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-14
There are a few areas that Indianapolis Colts officials hope to bolster during the draft and in the post-draft free agent period, including wide receiver, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback and running back.

Trying to figure out where exactly the Colts go with their first-round pick is a crapshoot. Team president Bill Polian does a masterful job in not showing his hand too quickly and it won't be any different in this year's draft.

Indianapolis has already signed the two key free agents on its list this offseason, keeping CB Kelvin Hayden and C Jeff Saturday on the roster for the next three seasons.

The team may decide to bring back other free agents, such as RB Dominic Rhodes (UFA), CB Keiwan Ratliff (UFA) and perhaps LB Tyjuan Hagler (UFA). Rhodes and Ratliff would seem to be the best bet to ultimately re-sign with the Colts if they can't find better deals anywhere else.

Polian has said that wide receiver would seem to be the greatest area of need in the draft. He made those comments several weeks before veteran WR Marvin Harrison was released, so that area would seem to take on even greater importance now.

1. Wide Receiver: No Marvin Harrison and the jury is still out on backups Roy Hall and Pierre Garcon. This year's draft class seems to be deep in quality receivers, so the Colts may strike early.

2. Defensive Tackle: Getting bigger up front is a given. But Indianapolis won't trade size for athleticism, speed and quickness.

3. Linebacker: Losing RFA Freddy Keiaho and UFA Tyjuan Hagler means that the Colts will be thin, depth-wise, at the position. Finding a capable backup to MLB Gary Brackett would also work as well.

MEDICAL WATCH: TE Tom Santi (shoulder) should be ready to take part in offseason workouts and in the team's OTA sessions this spring. Santi was placed on the Colts' injured reserve list as he missed the final six games of the regular season.

--S Matt Giordano will test the open market. May re-sign with the Colts later.

--LB Tyjuan Hagler is not expected to be re-signed. Could return, however, if the price is right.

--CB Keiwan Ratliff may be back at a later date. He will test the free-agent market first, though.

--RB Dominic Rhodes would like to remain with the Colts, but will take the opportunity to see what kind of money may be available.

--P Hunter Smith was not offered a contract and at this point will probably not return to the Colts.

--DE Josh Thomas could also return later in the offseason if the right kind of deal can be worked out.

--LB Freddy Keiaho (not tendered as RFA) has become a quality starter for the Colts on the weak side. Is valuable since he can play all three linebacking roles if needed. Could be re-signed at less than the RFA tender.

--RB Lance Ball was on the practice squad for most of the 2008 season but played well in the regular-season finale with Tennessee. May be brought back for a longer look.

--LB Buster Davis took over as the starter at middle linebacker when Gary Brackett was injured late in the season. His return next season is a tossup right now.

--G/T Daniel Federkeil: ERFA; terms unknown.

--CB Kelvin Hayden: Potential UFA; $43M/5 yrs, $22M guaranteed.

--DT Daniel Muir: ERFA; terms unknown.

--C Jeff Saturday: Potential UFA; $13.3M/3 yrs, $7.45M SB; 2009 cap: $3.98M.

--P Mike Dragosavich (waivers Browns).

--WR Marvin Harrison (released).

--DT Darrell Reid: UFA Broncos; $6.8M/3 yrs, SB unknown.
