Indianapolis Colts Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-03
Don't count on the Indianapolis Colts to draft purely on need at a specific position. Team president Bill Polian has said that he just doesn't believe in that way of thinking.

If the player the Colts want isn't readily available, they'll go back to their philosophy of "taking the best available player" regardless of position.

"We did that a couple of years ago when we selected (wide receiver) Reggie Wayne in the first round," Polian recalls. "Everybody thought that we were going to take a defensive player. But when it came time for us to make a pick, the guy we wanted there wasn't available. Reggie was and that was the way that we went.

"I think adding Reggie has worked out pretty well. But we didn't fall into the trap of taking someone based solely on a perceived need. We got the guy who could best help our team, regardless of what position that he played. And that was Reggie."

Improving the Colts depth across the board appears to be one of the primary goals heading into the NFL Draft later this month.

While Indianapolis should be in pretty good shape in terms of returning starters at most positions, finding enough quality backups -- especially at linebacker, running back, offensive line, and in the secondary -- will no doubt be among the major priorities over the next month or so.

1. Wide receiver: Whenever possible, add more offensive firepower. Finding a receiver who fills the large void left by the release of veteran Marvin Harrison remains one of the primary goals for the Colts in the upcoming draft.

2. Defensive tackle: Will Indianapolis take a defensive tackle with its first-round pick? Doubtful. If the right guy is there, the Colts will make the move. But look for the team to wait until the middle rounds to address this area.

3. Linebacker: Athleticism and the ability to be a playmaker is what Indianapolis is looking for. Height isn't as much as a factor as speed, quickness and an ability to get to the football in a hurry.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

--S Matt Giordano will test the open market. May re-sign with the Colts later.

--LB Tyjuan Hagler is not expected to be re-signed. Could return, however, if the price is right.

--CB Keiwan Ratliff may be back at a later date. He will test the free-agent market first, though.

--RB Dominic Rhodes would like to remain with the Colts, but will take the opportunity to see what kind of money may be available.

--P Hunter Smith was not offered a contract and at this point will probably not return to the Colts.

--DE Josh Thomas could also return later in the offseason if the right kind of deal can be worked out.

--LB Freddy Keiaho (not tendered as RFA) has become a quality starter for the Colts on the weak side. Is valuable since he can play all three linebacking roles if needed. Could be re-signed at less than the RFA tender.

--RB Lance Ball: ERFA; terms unknown.

--G/T Daniel Federkeil: ERFA; terms unknown.

--CB Kelvin Hayden: Potential UFA; $43M/5 yrs, $22M guaranteed.
